Top 5 interior design trends for 2020

If you’re keen to stamp a little personality into your humble abode but you’re not sure where to start, we can help.

Here’s a look at five of the key design trends predicted for 2020 – and how you can recreate them yourself.

Trend 1: Carpets

According to home renovation platform Houzz, ‘carpets’ are a rising trend, with searches on their website up by 77% since the spring. It states that carpets in living rooms are particularly popular with the search term 'living room' rising 90% since March 2019. Add a few candles, a cosy fur throw and a plush grey carpet and your living room will look as though it was ripped from a hip Scandinavian interiors guide. Just the vibe we’re going for in 2020.

Trend 2: Bookshelves

Searches for bookshelves have skyrocketed recently. In the colder months, people are looking to curl up on the sofa and read a book with a hot drink. Inject some Danish hygge into your own home by picking out a new bookshelf or repurposing an old one. Dark paint is in for 2020 so head on down to your nearest DIY store for some dusky lacquer and Bob’s your interior on-trend uncle.

Trend 3: Statement bathrooms

Bathrooms have typically tended to be fairly uniform in decoration with none too daring décor that blends with the typically white fittings. 2020 is expected to kick off a trend for statement bathrooms. Think dark painted skirting boards, white tiles and a bold patterned wallpaper such as zebra print or dalmatian. Eat your heart out, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Trend 4: Give a plant a home

In these environmentally sensitive times, house plants are officially trendy again. The online furniture store Made.com stated that the sales of plant accessories quadrupled this year and it shows no signs of slowing down in 2020. Even if you don’t have green fingers, spider plants, snake plants and yuccas are easy to look after and can transform a living space into a serene oasis.

Trend 5: Art Deco

Art Deco is back: think old school glamour, rich colours, and the sort of decadent detail that’d make Jay Gatsby jealous. If you want to make your home Charleston friendly for next year a la 1920, this would be the way to do it. Mismatched mirrors, funky vintage rugs, geometric shapes, animal print side tables, and glamorous chandeliers. Honestly, what’s not to love?
